
PicoWay vs. PicoSure: The Real Difference Isn't the Brand Name
We get asked this constantly, and the short answer is: it doesn’t matter which one you pick as much as two other questions we’ll get to in a minute. But since you’re asking — we run the Candela PicoWay, and here’s the honest version of why.
PicoWay fires three wavelengths — 532nm, 785nm, and 1064nm — and it does it with picosecond pulses, meaning the laser is on and off in a trillionth of a second. That speed is the whole point. Picosecond pulses shatter pigment with pressure waves rather than heat, which is a different mechanism than most people assume a “laser” uses. That’s why we picked it, and it’s why we can treat ink colors and skin tones that older devices can’t touch safely. Everything below is the reasoning, not just the conclusion.
Picosecond vs. Q-switched: the pulse-duration difference that actually matters
Older tattoo removal lasers are Q-switched, meaning they fire in nanoseconds — billionths of a second. That’s still fast, but it’s slow enough that the laser’s energy converts partly to heat when it hits the ink particle. Heat means more risk to the surrounding skin, and it means the ink breaks into larger fragments that your body has to clear out over more sessions.
Picosecond lasers fire roughly a thousand times faster. At that speed, the energy doesn’t have time to convert to heat in the same way — instead it hits the ink particle so fast that it shatters it with a mechanical pressure wave, almost like a rubber-band snap instead of a slow burn. The ink breaks into finer particles. Finer particles clear out through the lymphatic system faster and more completely. That’s the entire case for picosecond over Q-switched, and it’s a real one — not heat, pressure.
“The latest laser” is a marketing phrase — the wavelengths are the actual spec
Every clinic will tell you they use “the latest laser.” That phrase means almost nothing, because it’s not tied to anything you can check. What actually matters is the specific device and its wavelengths — a number you can ask for, get a straight answer to, and verify against what the manufacturer publishes. If a clinic can’t tell you the wavelengths their device fires, that tells you something. That’s not marketing — it’s the reality of how these machines are built and cleared for use, and it’s the one spec that predicts your outcome more than the name on the housing.
PicoWay’s three wavelengths — and why colored ink needs more than one
Tattoo ink isn’t one substance. Black ink absorbs light differently than green ink, which absorbs differently than a pastel pink or a light blue. A laser that only fires one wavelength is tuned to break down whatever ink absorbs that specific wavelength well — usually black and dark blue — and it struggles with everything else.
PicoWay’s 532nm, 785nm, and 1064nm wavelengths cover all ink colors including blues, greens, and pastels, because each wavelength targets a different part of the color spectrum that ink pigments absorb. Older single-wavelength lasers struggle with these colors specifically because they were never built to reach them in the first place — you can run more sessions at the same intensity and the green or pastel ink just doesn’t respond the way black ink does. This is the actual, checkable reason a multi-wavelength device matters for anyone with a colored tattoo, not a brand preference.
Why Fitzpatrick range is the safety question, not the brand name
Fitzpatrick scale runs I through VI, from very fair skin that burns easily to deep skin tones that rarely burn but pigment differently when injured. PicoWay is safe for Fitzpatrick I through VI, which is the reason we can treat a broad range of clients without having to tell someone with darker skin that we can’t take their case.
But “the device is rated for it” isn’t the same as “the clinic is using it correctly for your skin.” We do a free consultation and skin-type (Fitzpatrick) assessment before your first session for a specific reason: the settings that work safely on fair skin can cause burns or lasting discoloration on darker skin if they’re not adjusted. That assessment is the difference between clean results and burns — not a formality, an actual decision point that changes how the laser is set. A clinic that doesn’t ask about your skin type before lasering dark skin is a red flag for burns or pigment changes, full stop, regardless of which picosecond device sits in the room. Ask what they do before the first pulse, not just what machine they own.
What sessions actually look like
Tattoo removal with PicoWay typically runs 5 to 12 sessions spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. That spacing isn’t arbitrary — it’s how long your body needs to clear the shattered ink particles between treatments, and going faster doesn’t speed up the biology.
Where you land in that 5-to-12 range depends on ink color, ink age, and skin tone. A small, older black tattoo on fair skin might clear in five or six sessions. A dense, colorful, more recent tattoo — especially with greens or pastels — can run toward the higher end. We won’t promise complete removal, because we can’t know in advance exactly how your specific ink will respond. Clinics still running Q-switched lasers at a lower price
You’ll still find Q-switched lasers priced lower per session than PicoWay. That’s real, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. What that price difference doesn’t show you is how many more sessions the slower mechanism typically requires to reach the same result — which changes the total cost more than the per-session number suggests. The same picosecond mechanism that clears body ink works on cosmetic tattoos — microblading, lip blush, eyeliner, and brow tattoos that didn’t heal the way you wanted or that you’re ready to be rid of. The question to ask before you book
Stop asking “PicoWay or PicoSure” as if the brand settles anything. Ask two things instead: how many wavelengths does the device fire, and what Fitzpatrick range is it cleared for. Then ask whether the clinic does a free consultation and skin-type assessment before your first session, or whether they’re ready to laser you the moment you sit down. Ask about wavelengths, not just the word “picosecond” — plenty of machines qualify for that word and still leave you with a narrower, riskier range than you’d expect. And ask about pricing directly: no upsells, no vague “package” that turns out to cost more once you ask what’s actually included.
